Milan Design Week 2017
Milan Design Week 2017
Last week Italy played host to the world’s largest and most fashionable furniture show, the ‘Salone del Mobile Milano’. Some 300,000+ people, including us, descended on Milan for 5 days of interior design heaven.
With our most comfortable shoes on, we embarked on our first, day map in hand and with a determination to seek out the best and most exciting new products and designs.
Amongst the 2000+ exhibitors where some of our favourite brands; Cattelan Italia, Reflex, Calligaris and Visionnaire to name just a few. Each brand had gone all out to create a stand that displayed their products in the best possible way, some even adorning their products with catwalk models and the occasional Supercar.
After visiting a few stands a general theme was emerging…colour and functionality were this year’s design philosophy.
Here are some of our favourite looks which we hope will inspire you as much as they did us.
Creating a bold contrast in colour can be made easy with a statement rug. Using this Calligaris very flat rug against the black angular bases of the dining chairs and the table create a very strong modern look. Calligaris Basil dining chairs, Calligaris Claire dining chairs in fabric. The Calligaris dining table is yet to be released but the look can be achieved with the Calligaris Tokyo dining table.
The same look achieved with the Calligaris Orbital table *shown with a new finish. Simple lighting can also lift any room, not drawing your attention away from the main items but adding that finishing touch. Shown above is a cluster of Calligaris Pom Pom single pendants.
Finish off a feature wall with these Calligaris Damasco mirrors. Available in 3 different sizes and colours.
If you are the entertaining type but short on space this Cattelan Italia Drop wall mounted bar is the perfect solution! Combining functionality with elegant design, this was one of our favourites. Available in 5 different finishes meaning finding the right one for your room is simple.
Sangiacomo really stood out, combining desk space with a modular wall system creating this stunning display! Perfect for city living or a quirky office space.
Another example by Sangiacomo combines a foldaway desk with a wall mounted tv system and bookcase; ideal for family living. The desk is the perfect spot for the kids to do their homework whilst you sit back and watch a movie.
This Lago wardrobe/room divider uses large clear glass panels to create the impression your clothes are floating in mid air! The top and bottom units can be used for additional storage as well. Creating your own quirky piece of furniture is easy with Lago, the only thing in holding you back is your own imagination.
For those of you who are daring why not challenge the conventional and go for a floating hidden door wardrobe. Each panel can come in a different colour and finish, it can also be custom built to fit your space.
Creating space, either using clear glass panels or by lifting furniture off the floor, is a clever way to make a room feel larger than it is and it also allows more light into the room.
Don’t worry if you’re not the creative type, that’s what we’re here for. Come and visit us in store; we have furniture arriving on the shop floor every week.
We hope our trip to the Milan furniture show has inspired you! Don’t forget to follow us on Instagram, Facebook and Twitter…watch this space for new brands arriving soon.
